Before coming to our notary public office or having a mobile notary come to you, there are several things you should consider.
1. What type of notarization do you need? Is it an acknowledgment, a jurat or a copy certification? If you are not sure, you should contact whomever drafted the document.
2. Make sure the document is complete!
3. Bring acceptable identification. This could be a state issued ID with photo, or a passport, drivers license or military ID.
4. Make sure the name on your document matches the name on your ID!
5. Make sure all signers are present for the notarization.
6. Be aware of what you are signing, and be willing to sign it. Keep in mind a notary will not give you legal advice, but will ask if you are willing and mentally aware.
7. Know what you are paying! In Washington State we are limited to charge $15.00 per act, but additional fees for printing or travel will likely be assessed.
Knowing these steps will ensure the process is smooth and will cut down on any additional trips. Nearly any document can be notarized. A few exceptions are for vital records such as birth, death or marriage certificates. Likewise, a notary cannot notarize things such as sports memorabilia.
